Some Lesson Definitions
THE WORKOUT-These are pieces we choose to work on to improve your overall playing and is the most important part of your practice
PERFORMANCE PIECE-This is the piece you will be performing at the next performance class. This piece you should have memorized, excellent note accuracy, great intonation, great tone, and great expression. You should also feel comfortable playing this in front of an audience.
POLISH PIECE-This is the piece just before of your new piece. This piece is memorized, completing the final touches on note accuracy, intonation, tone and expression
NEW PIECE-the latest working piece at your own speed
REVIEW LIST-These pieces you want to keep at an A level.
OTHER REVIEW
These are all of the other pieces you know from Suzuki literature not on the review list. You will still want to run these occasionally to make sure that when they come up on a review list it won't take too long to get back into shape, if they are asked for at a workshop or an institute, and you never know when JAMES HAS BEEN KNOWN TO SPRING ONE OF THESE ON YOU IN GROUP!

PERFORMANCE CLASS Performance Class is a chance for the violinist to work and perform for each other in smaller groups. This is very much in the Dr. Suzuki master class teaching. We will hear prepared solos, comment as a group on these solos, play group pieces, and chamber music.
In the spring we will have a chamber music recital with these groups

  PERFORMANCE CLASS SCHEDULE

Some extra thoughts- Our studio offers lots of opportunities beyond the private lesson (group, concerts, etc.). I would love for everyone to participate in all of these, however I know for many of you that is impossible. My goal is for you all to participate in as much as you are comfortable with. Part of the reason I offer as much as I do is so if one thing isn't the most convenient there will be another opportunity.

All students move at different speeds thru the literature. This has to do with how much time is spent practicing and listening. How much time a child has to practice depends on how booked they are and how much the family decides to prioritize the violin. I love teaching a student who is in a book for 4 years just as much as one that completes a book in half a year. That's my philosophy and what I believe is part of the Suzuki philosophy. As long as it is done in a positive and nurturing way.I'm happy.

Starting in January I'm going to ask that all students fill out their practice sheets. This is to help the practice become more organized and so I can tell where I need to have the kids focus there practice.

I am always open to questions about my teaching method.
